Birth Control Options: From Tubal Ligation to the Pill and IUDs
From birth control pill, patches and rings, IUD’s (Mirena and Paragard), to tubal ligation, Dr. Steven Rabin has the experience to help you make a great personal decision.
For breastfeeding mothers or women who cannot tolerate estrogen there is a progestin only birth control pill. This has very good effectiveness but will not necessarily provide a regular and predictable period pattern.
A convenient and highly effective option is the vaginal contraceptive ring (Nuvaring). This is inserted into the vagina and stays in place for 3 weeks. Then it is removed for one “ring-free week” during which the period normally occurs. Regardless of the onset or end of that period, a new ring in placed after the ring-free week and this process is repeated.
There are several hormone-free options such as the diaphragm birth control options. A diaphragm must be sized by an experienced gynecologist and then you take your prescription to the pharmacy and buy your diaphragm and contraceptive gel. Before you leave the office, you can practice with our sterilized sample diaphragm and we can help you become comfortable with the insertion and removal process.

The Paragard IUD is hormone free and is inserted here during an office visit. We can confirm the location of the IUD with an ultrasound examination. Likewise, the Mirena and Skyla IUDs contains a progestin (one of the two hormones found in birth control pills) and has a good track record of reducing your menstrual flow and sometime eliminating is entirely while it remains in place for up to 5 years. Either one of these IUD’s can be removed whenever you choose. If you don’t like it or if you are ready to try to become pregnant, IUD removal is a simple in-office procedure that is usually even easier than the insertion.
With so many options, this cannot simply be a cookie-cutter approach where one sizes fits all!
